This Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course is an 8-week course (9 classes) based on systematic and intensive training in mindfulness meditation and mindful hatha yoga. Enrollment in the course takes place at an orientation session that will be held prior to the start of the course.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was founded in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. During its 30 year existence, MBSR has been well researched. It has become an internationally acclaimed mind-body program designed to teach participants how to apply mindfulness in their everyday lives so as to more effectively deal with stress, physical and psychological pain, illness and the pressure and demands of everyday living. People willing to participate in their own health and well-being have reported to benefit from this stress reduction program. To view a video clip of Dr. Kabat-Zinn speaking about MBSR go to www.youtube.com and enter in the search box Jon Kabat-Zinn Stress Reduction 1 of 6.

The program provides: guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices and gentle stretching and mindful yoga; group dialogue and mindful communication exercises to enhance awareness in everyday life; daily home assignments, home practice manual, guided mindfulness practice CDs.

Participants provide: commitment to him/herself and to learning ‘how’ to take care of him/herself; yoga mat and meditation cushion (optional, chairs are available).

This highly participatory, supportive, structured, experiential learning program begins with a required orientation session for the purpose of receiving information about the course and determining one’s readiness to make the commitment to the course. Participants are asked to attend all weekly classes, the all-day class and to practice daily home assignments for 45-60 minutes/day.

There is no fee for attending the orientation session. It is open to anyone interested in exploring enrollment in the course either at this time or at a future time. The purpose of the orientation is to explain the program in more detail as well as the commitment required of participants who register for it. Registration for the program will take place that evening after the orientation.

Please note: (1) No advanced registrations will be taken. Individuals interested in registering for this program can only register at the orientation.
(2) It’s strongly suggested that participants bring a yoga mat and a meditation cushion to all sessions.
(3) Community members welcome.
