An introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), which is a natural and visual-gestural language used by deaf people in the Unites States and Canada. It covers finger spelling, signs, grammar, syntax, sentence structure, non-manual behaviors, basic communication techniques, and conversational skills as well as receptive and expressive language skill development. Discussion regarding deaf culture is incorporated. Participation in the deaf community is required. |
Asl 101X American Sign Language |

It covers fingerspelling, signs, grammar, syntax, sentence structure, non-manual behaviors, basic communication technqiues, and conversational skills as well as receptive and expressive language skill development. Discussion regarding Deaf culture is incorporated. Participation in the deaf community is required. |
Asl 102 American Sign Language II |
Lecture: 3 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs. |
A continuation of level 1 (101). Students will increase their knowledge of this visual-gestural language. They will also improve their flexibility and clarity of signs in order to better communicate with deaf people. Prerequisites: ASL 101 or ASL 101X. |
Asl 201X Inter American Sign Language I |
Lecture: 3 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs. |
Students will build on fine tuning skills acquired in ASL 1 and ASL 2 and to improve their knowledge and skills. Students will expand their flexibility to communicate with deaf people and will increase their comprehension of signing. Development of other, distinctive aspects of deaf communication will be explored. Emphasis is also on the history that has shaped the deaf culture and community. This course is especially beneficial for students who are interested in careers in teaching, interpreting or other jobs working with deaf people. Prerequisites: ASL 102 with a Grade of C or better. |
