Com 155 Media Arts:Culture and History


Lecture: 3 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs.


Emphasis on the influence of images on culture and history. Concentrates on the major figures in photography and advertising as a reflection of their culture and time and their influence on aesthetics and culture. Study of photographic images, graphic design and advertising images, movements, and technology and their relationship to art, society, and history.


Com 172 Intro to Telecommunications

An introduction to radio and television telecommunications, providing a theoretical background for study of techniques. Students explore broadcast history, current industry developments, and the integration of World Wide Web in broadcast operations.


Com 173 Basic Broadcast Techniques


Lecture: 1 hr. Other: 6 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs.


Beginning course dealing with radio broadcast programming, announcing, audio recording and control, an introduction to digital audio workstations and a studio operator's functions. Students gain practical experience working on-air at WGFR, the College's FM radio station.


Com 173B Basic Broadcasting Techniques


Lecture: 1 hr. Other: 2 hrs. Credit: 1 hrs.


Beginning course for non-broadcasting majors interested in on-air announcing and control. Computer-based digital audio production will also be introduced. Students gain practical experience working on-air at WGFR, the College's FM radio station. Course meets for five weeks with on-air experience continuing throughout the semester. COM 173B is not open to Broadcasting AAS or certificate students.


Com 178 Communication/Media Internship


Other: 1 hr. Credit: 1 hrs.


A field experience with an approved agency or individual relative to the student's classroom learning. The work site is usually solicited by the student. Number of credits are determined based on the terms of the internship. For Broadcasting and Communications/Media Arts majors only. AAS students may register for Internship in the third or fourth semester, or upon successful completion of at least 32 credits hours; 18 of which are in their major. Certificate students may register for Internship in their second semester, or after completing 9 credits in their major. For Communication and Media Arts students, a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the major is required. Offered for 1, 2 or 3 credits.


Com 183 Mass Communications


Lecture: 3 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs.


An introduction to mass communication in America, beginning with the basic principles of communication. The history and development of the mass media is studied to forecast future trends and potential issues. Mass media's effect on society and culture is examined.


Com 185 TV Studio Production


Lecture: 2 hrs. Other: 4 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs.


A basic multi-camera studio TV production course including pre-production planning, scripting, camera operation, direction, switching and special effects, lighting, floor direction and talent.


Com 186 Television Field Production


Lecture: 1 hr. Other: 6 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs.


A basic single-camera TV production techniques course for news, human interest, and feature reports, with applications throughout broadcast, cable, educational and industrial television. Camera techniques, composition and pictorial elements, lighting, talent, and emphasis on post-production editing techniques.


Com 187 Advanced TV Seminar


Lecture: 1 hr. Other: 4 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs.


An advanced practicum in studio and/or editing-based television production. Students design their projects in consultation with the instructor. Prerequisites: COM 185 or COM 186.


Com 188 Applied/Prod Radio


Lecture: 1 hr. Other: 3 hrs. Credit: 2 hrs.


A practicum course in radio production and programming utilizing WGFR, the college radio station, and the radio production labs. Students will create, schedule, and broadcast news and community affairs programming and other non-music programming. Advanced production and programming techniques will be introduced. Prerequisites: COM 173.


Com 191 Radio Station Operation


Lecture: 1 hr. Credit: 1 hrs.


Students participate in actual operation of the campus radio station during summer sessions. Offered Summers only.


Com 201 Intro to Broadcast Writing


Lecture: 2 hrs. Lab: 2 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs.


This course develops the theories and techniques of writing for radio and television. Students get practical experience writing news stories, commercial and program promotions scripts, and documentary scripts. Special emphasis is placed on accepted writing styles for the electronic media. Students get experience preparing and delivering newscasts on WGFR, ACC's FM radio station. Prerequisites: ENG 101 with a Grade of C or better or ENG 100A with a Grade of C or better and ENG 100B with a Grade of C or better and COM 173.


Com 202 Broadcast Sales & Management


Lecture: 3 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs.


An examination of the organizational structures of radio and broadcast and cable television stations. Management principles, policy issues and programming strategies are explored. The broadcast sales process explores ratings, market research, sales presentations, and advertising campaign development. Prerequisites: COM 172.


Com 203 Communication Law


Lecture: 3 hrs. Credit: 3 hrs.


An introduction to federal and state laws as they pertain to the media. The issues of copyright, privacy, libel, and media access are examined with special consideration given to media ethics, integrity and credibility. Contemporary and historic First Amendment cases are studied. Prerequisites: COM 172.
