Research Assistance:
Reference librarians are available to assist library users with research questions whenever the library is open. Just stop by the reference desk, call the ACC Library (743-2260) or e-mail librarian@sunyacc.edu (answered daily when library is open).
The ACC Library’s Web page also lists research guides, recommending Web sites on dozens of topics.
ACC Library's Web page:
The ACC Library’s Web page links to the online catalog, article databases, periodical list, research guides and tutorials, as well as information on the historical Hill Collection, library hours, policies, library staff and faculty. Also see the General Information link.
To search Library databases from home:
• Go to the ACC Library’s Web page: http://library.sunyacc.edu
• Anyone in the world can access ACC Library’s book catalog and research guides and tutorials.
• ACC students, faculty and staff may access dozens of databases from off-campus using their network accounts. To look up your username and password, go to ACC Web page > Inside ACC > Student Portal > Look up Account and Password. Follow the screen directions that appear when you click on a database from off-campus. Just enter your network account username and password as in the example, when prompted.
Finding books and multimedia items:
The library offers:
• almost 5,000 reference books (on library’s main floor), with fast facts and summaries. These books may not be borrowed, so are always in the library.
• almost 55,000 circulating books (on library’s upper floor). Borrow these for four weeks with an ACC student identification card.
• dozens of electronic reference books, under the link Finding Books > Reference.
To search the library’s catalog for a book, video, CD, DVD or cassette tape:
• Go to the library’s Web site: http://library.sunyacc.edu > Finding Books > Catalog.
• Type in your search. When you find a citation for a book suiting your needs, write down the call number.
• To find a book on the shelf, go to the appropriate floor and area. Follow the Library of Congress call numbers on the book spines line by line. Reference books are located on the main floor; circulating books on the upper level.
• For a tutorial to ACC Library's catalog, see: Research Guides & Tutorials > Online Catalog Tutorial.
Multimedia Material:
Videos, audio books, DVDs, music CDs and other multimedia material are located on the library’s main floor. Search for them by subject, title, etc. using the ACC Library’s online catalog, as you would books. Students and community users may borrow audio books for two weeks. Use the equipment in the reference area for all other media items. Faculty may borrow multimedia material for classroom use.
Finding articles:
The ACC Library subscribes to more than 300 magazines, scholarly journals and newspapers, located on the main floor. Thousands of additional periodicals are available electronically through the ACC Library’s many article databases. Many offer full-text articles. The databases are available on all ACC Library computers.
Article databases are listed on the Library's Web page under Finding Articles. Then, choose General or Subject Databases and choose a database. Each databases is described on the page. These are subscription services. ACC students, faculty and staff may search these subscription products from home by following screen directions. Others may use the databases by visiting the library.
Research guides and tutorials:
ACC’s reference librarians have created research guides on dozens of popular research subjects. The guides recommend books, article databases and Web sites to make the research process more successful. See the Research Guides link on the library’s Web page.
Four tutorials are also available: Online Catalog Tutorial, two on Research Steps and How to Search the Web. Narrated by an ACC librarian, they offer research tips customized to the ACC Library.
Computer use:
Twenty-five computers near the Reference Desk have full access to the Web for research. All computers are connected to laser printers. They print double-sided copies only, to conserve paper. There is currently no charge for printing. No food or drink is allowed near the computers.
Library computers offer Web access and Word. For more software and questions about using software, students may visit the Student Computing Center on the ground floor of the Scoville Learning Center. It has a 100-computer lab with a wide variety of software.
The primary purpose of the computers is research. If others are waiting to use computers for research, those using them for non-research purposes will be asked to give up their computers. Users of ACC computers must abide by the ACC Computer Use Policy. Anyone who does not follow the policy will be asked to stop using the computers.
Community users may use the computers for a maximum of an hour between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Community members may use computers for longer times after 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends depending on student demand. Community members should stop by the reference desk first to ask to be logged on.
It is acceptable to bring covered beverages and food into the library. It is not acceptable to spill them. You are responsible for any material that is damaged by spilled food or drink. Please use common sense: clean up after eating, and do not bring in foods that have odors that would disturb other library users.
The ACC Library does have Wi-Fi: wireless access to the Web for laptops. Ask a librarian for details.
