Is an Online Course Right for You?

Many students do very well in online courses and take them semester after semester. But other students discover - too late - that their learning style or study patterns or computer skills or time constraints aren't a good match for the particular demands of taking courses online.

efore you read any further, take this one-minute quiz to find out if an online course is right foryou.

How Do Web-based Courses Work?

  • Online credit courses at ACC are not self-paced.
They start and end with the regular semester calendar. Just as in classroom-based courses, online courses have reading and homework assignments with deadlines. When you enroll in an online course, plan to begin "attending class" the very first day of the semester just as you would for classroom-based courses.
  • You work asynchronously.
Unlike classroom-based courses, you and your instructor and your coursemates each work on your own time schedule and in separate locations. Sitting at your desk at home, you might write comments in the discussion area of your course Monday night. Your classmate John might read and respond to your comments on Wednesday at 6 AM using a laptop computer in his hotel room. Then at noon on Thursday your classmate Rita reads both your comments and John's response while she sits at her desk at work during her lunch break.
    • Working on your own schedule doesn't mean that ACC online courses are self-paced.
    • You must log in and begin working the first day of class.
    • You are expected to keep up with the work and meet deadlines for assignments just as in a classroom-based course.
  • Expect to write a lot!
All communication is done using tools built right into your web-based course, tools such as discussion areas and bulletin boards in which you and your classmates exchange ideas by writing back and forth to one another.
  • You have time to think about your questions and think about your answers.
And online courses give you plenty of opportunities to say what's on your mind.
