Upward Bound students volunteer at The Glen at Hiland Meadows on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

QUEENSBURY -- On Monday, January 16, SUNY Adirondack's Upward Bound Program celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by volunteering at The Glen at Hiland Meadows in Queensbury. Earlier in the year, the program's student advisory committee decided their day off from school would be spent doing their favorite community service project: serving and spending time with the elderly.  Fifteen students visited The Glen to play a variety of board games and Wii Bowling with residents.

Participating Upward Bound students came from Fort Ann, Hudson Falls, Glens Falls, and South Glens Falls.

Breanna Parsons and Jasmine Matos play Skip-Bo with residents of The Glen at Hiland Meadows in Queensbury as part of the Upward Bound Program's commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 16.

Nick Bull, Upward Bound Program coordinator Kate O'Sick and Imani Mack play Scrabble with a resident of The Glen at Hiland Meadows in Queensbury as part of the program's commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 16.

Upward Bound is a federally grant funded Educational Opportunity Program designed to eliminate poverty and racial injustice in the U.S.  Currently under the regulation of the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, Upward Bound provides 9th through 12th graders with an intensive college preparatory program.  Serving first generation and income eligible students, the goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.  To meet this goal, Upward Bound concentrates on four major areas: academic skill building, career exploration, college preparation, and personal development.  SUNY Adirondack's Upward Bound Program serves students from Fort Ann, Fort Edward, Hudson Falls, Glens Falls, and South Glens Falls.
