Art historian latest in SUNY Adirondack lecture series

Writers Project continues with curator's view on Asian American artists

QUEENSBURY, New York (Sept. 25, 2023) — SUNY Adirondack welcomes art historian Amy Kahng at 12:40 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, in the Visual Arts Gallery in Dearlove Hall as part of the college’s ongoing Writers Project series.

Kahng is a doctoral candidate in Art History and Criticism at Stony Brook University and a Patricia and Phillip Frost predoctoral fellow at Smithsonian American Art Museum. 

Kahng’s dissertation examines 20th-century Asian American artists and their relationships to land and landscape. She has also researched global contemporary art, modern and contemporary art in Korea, and transnational feminist art practices. Her master’s thesis centered on South Korean artist Lee Bul’s use of parody and play in the 1990s.

She is an independent curator who contributed to projects at MoMA, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, J. Paul Getty Museum, Kukje Gallery and Weisman Museum of Art. She curated exhibitions including “Mis/Communication: Language and Power in Contemporary Art,” “Printing Solidarity: Tricontinental Graphics from Cuba” and “Revisiting 5+1.”

The Writers Project series continues with the following events:

  • Monday, Oct. 9: Abenaki author, storyteller and Saratoga Springs poet laureate Joseph Bruchac celebrates Indigenous People’s Month with a talk at 12:40 p.m. in the Visual Arts Gallery. 
  • Monday, Oct. 23: Stuart Bartow, beloved retired SUNY Adirondack professor of English, will offer a combined reading and workshop at 12:40 p.m. in the Visual Arts Gallery.
  • Monday, Oct. 30: LGBTQ fiction writer Lannie Stabile will speak at 12:40 p.m. via Zoom. Guests are invited to watch it live-streamed in the Visual Arts Gallery. Her books are available in the college bookstore.
  • Monday, Nov. 27: Award-winning poet Barbara Ungar will speak at 12:40 p.m. in the Visual Arts Gallery. Books will be available at the event.
  • Monday, Dec. 4: Editor Walter McLaughlin of Wood Thrush Books will speak at 12:40 p.m. in the Visual Arts Gallery. Books will be available.
