Academic Adjustments

An accommodation is a physical or academic provision established by the college to enable students with disabilities to attain equal access to a course, program, service, activity or facility. In accordance with Federal legislation, SUNY Adirondack seeks to provide students with disabilities equal opportunity to achieve equal academic resuts as non-disabled students by providing a range of academic adjustments (accommodations).

All academic adjustments are assessed and provided on an individual basis and must be grounded in the documentation submitted by or on behalf of the student. While students can request a particular type of academic adjustment, it is SUNY Adirondack that determines how to meet a particular need.

Therefore, alternative academic adjustments or modifications may be offered above those requested by the student. Academic adjustments will be denied only if the request is not reasonably grounded in documentation or the resulting adjustment has the effect of lowering academic standards of a course or program, or presents an undue financial or administrative burden to the college.

Common Accommodations

Each student’s needs and accommodative services will be evaluated and provided on an individual basis. In most cases, however, barriers to access are eliminated through the implementation of one or more of the following accommodations:

  • Extended Time on Exams
  • Separate Location/Reduced Distractions for Exams
  • Reader: Tests and quizzes are scanned and read by software (Read and Write Gold)
  • Scribe
  • Word Processing
  • Converted Format: This may include large-print or Braille exam material
  • Books in Alternate Format/Audio
  • Accommodative Furniture
  • Assistive Equipment and Technology
  • Note Takers
  • Course Substitutions
  • Interpreter Services
  • Recording Lectures
  • Tutoring
  • Reduced Course Load

NOTE: Requests for a reduced course load will be evaluated in terms of the impact of the disability and the demands of a proposed course schedule. Students playing varsity sports at SUNY Adirondack are subject to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) requirements and should consult with the Chair of the Athletic Department for these rules and regulations prior to committing to a reduced course load.
