Information Technology: Cybersecurity

The IT Cybersecurity (AAS) degree in Technology is a uniquely multifaceted discipline that is in high demand and embedded into all facets of industry. Half this degree program can be earned online.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Students will learn theoretical and hands-on knowledge in identifying network vulnerabilities and threats and counteract with the appropriate security controls to maintain confidentiality, integrity and the availability of data and systems. As security breaches can involve law enforcement, students will learn concepts in criminal justice, law and evidence handling. Built into this program, is curriculum harnessing content from certifications such as Cyber Operations (CCBA CyberOps), CompTIA Security+ and EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacker.

  • Internships for hands-on experience with regional businesses

  • Data Matrix Zone (DMZ) club provides opportunities for students, including trips to industries such as Cisco Systems and Google and work on dream teams such as the NBA All-Star week with the IT professionals from the NBA and Safari Communications
  • Industry-certified professors who have earned positions on Cisco Live and NBA IT Dream Teams
  • Cisco Systems sponsored online curriculum utilized in certain courses
  • Courses infused with hands-on learning in  IT Computer Networking and Security VM  labs using Windows, Linux, Kali, Metasploitable, etc.
  • Specialized course work towards industry certifications
  • Students can participate in "Capture the Flag" (CTF) competitions in Albany and online at National Cyber League.  

TRANSFER OPPORTUNITIES

While the Cybersecurity degree prepares graduates for immediate entrance to the workforce, those seeking further education toward a four-year degree can seamlessly transfer to SUNY Empire State or Excelsior. Students may also transfer a majority of credits to other colleges including:

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

There are many career paths and educational opportunities available to those with cybersecurity experience, traditionally known as information security, as the ability to secure data is fundamental to all industries. The New York Department of Labor’s Division of Research and Statistics projects a 39 percent increase in Information Security Analyst positions over the 2015-2024 period. Cybersecurity positions include:

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify and analyze ethical and legal issues related to IT security.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of current security concepts relative to policy development, physical security, network defense, and disaster and recovery planning.
  3. Apply industry standard IT security practices to protect against various social engineering and technical security risks.
  4. Secure information as it exists on computer systems and as it transmits over networks.
  5. Design and present an IT security proposal outlining security policies and procedures with technical hardware and software recommendations.
