Access for all

The Accessibilities Services Office provides equal educational opportunities to students with disabilities by ensuring full access to all programs, activities and facilities of the college. Our office works in conjunction with faculty and administrative staff to guarantee that all qualified students are afforded the same collegiate opportunities available to the general college population, that no student be denied the benefits of any college program or activity and that no student be subjected to discrimination. 

The Accessibility Services Office strives to maintain the quality and integrity of SUNY Adirondack’s academic standards and programs while providing accommodations in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. As defined under these provisions, a student with a disability is a person who has a physical or mental impairment, a record of such impairment or is regarded as have such an impairment that significantly impacts one or more major life activity, which may include walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, concentration or the ability to care for oneself.

What we offer

The Accessibilities Services Office provides equal access to the college’s programs, services and activities for individuals with documented physical, learning and psychological disabilities. To receive accommodations, an individual must self-identify with the Accessibility Services Director and provide appropriate documentation. This information is confidential and is securely maintained in the Accessibility Services Office.

 

Prospective students should make an appointment to meet with the Accessibility Services Director to determine services available and to determine which services meet their individual needs to help ensure a positive college experience.

Supplementary orientation for individual with disabilities requiring physical orientation to the campus is provided in coordination with Admissions.

The Director of Accessibility Services will review a student’s documentation and will work with the student to identify and establish appropriate academic accommodations. Accommodation letters are sent to the student’s campus email prior to the start of the semester. Students have the responsibility to send their professor(s) their accommodation letter by using the “Forward” function in their email.

The Accessibility Services Office works with local agencies to hire interpreters and works within the college community to hire note takers. These services ar provided as accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Paid and/or volunteer note takers provide the eligible students with a copy of their classroom lecture notes.

The Accessibility Services Office works with outside agencies to provide support services for students. The Accessibility Services Office works with agencies such as Employment and Training Offices (JTPA), Veterans’ Administration (VA), Adult Career and Continuing Education Servi es - Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR, formerly known as VESID) and the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH) to assist eligible student with their vocational needs.

The office can assist with academic advising and works closely with the Advisement Center and the counselors.

  • Livescribe Echo Pens
  • FM Amplification system (Williams Sound)
  • Large-print materials
  • Assistance with accessing textbooks in electronic format
  • Text-to-speech software Read and Write Gold
  • Free membership to Bookshare and access to e-text for eligible students
