Academic Specialist, TRIO Upward Bound

SUMMARY: This 30 hour per week, 11 month position is part of a federally funded grant program designed to assist eligible 9th-12th grade students to develop the skills and motivation necessary to graduate from high school, enter and succeed in higher education.  Upward Bound serves: high school students from income eligible families and from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree in Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, Fort Ann, Fort Edward, South Glens Falls, Corinth, Argyle, Granville, Salem, Whitehall, Hartford, North Warren and Warrensburg.


  1. Develop and deliver workshops for students on topics related to academic success, SAT/ACT preparation, NYS Regent’s test preparation, and college preparation topics. 
  2. Plan and administer study groups for students to encourage academic success.
  3. Develop and implement supplemental instruction, tutoring curriculum and academic support nights that addresses areas of student learning and complements target high school classroom curriculum.
  4. Coordinate and conduct in-school visit meetings with students working on academic skill building and work closely with target school personnel to ensure appropriateness of educational and student services. 
  5. Assist in the implementation of the Summer Program hosted on the SUNY Adirondack campus.
  6. Occasional transportation of program participants using a SUNY Adirondack vehicle.
  7. Maintain student application files, communicate with students and parents to encourage timely fulfillment of admissions process, and process all related admissions paperwork.
  8. Communicate with students, families, campus and community; including: write and publish program newsletter, maintain social media accounts, and maintain program’s BLUMEN database.
  9. Other duties to support the program as assigned. 

Evening Hours required weekly. Occasional overnights and weekend hours.         



  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
  • Preferred knowledge of curriculum design and standardized testing
  • Familiarity with New York State educational requirements and Advanced Regents Diploma requirements
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate, encourage and develop rapport with “at-risk” and disenfranchised students required.

SALARY: $15 per hour.
