Role of the Learning Specialist

  The Learning Specialist works directly with the Office of Accessibility Services in coordinating a student’s needs with appropriate support services. To receive these services, recent documentation (within 3 years) of specific disability from your high school, medical doctor, a NYS Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) counselor or other appropriate source is required. Services can only be provided when necessary documentation is on file with ACC.

Information regarding off-campus diagnostic services is available on request.

SERVICES
The range of services provided by the Learning Specialist may include:
  • Consultation with the Learning Specialist,
  • Self-advocacy training,
  • Advocacy with faculty,
  • Alternative testing arrangements,
  • Academic Support,
  • Assistance in receiving books on tape,
  • Training to use assistive technology,
  • Assistance in arranging for note takers,
  • Assistance with proofreading/editing written work,
  • Training in specific skills (study habits, memory training, test-taking strategies, etc).
