Scheduling Research Sessions

Bring your classes to the library for customized sessions taught by a librarian, focusing on your specific research assignment. Each session includes a short lecture, demonstrations, research materials and hands-on time in the Library Instruction Room.

We offer these formats:
- For ENG101/ENG100: Research Steps, an introduction to the four-step research process. Students will learn research strategies and search techniques to find information with more success. See the
Research Guides and Tutorials page a narrated tutorial and a handout.
- For subject-oriented classes (sciences, humanities, etc.):
Sessions are customized to research assignments and use the Research Steps session model. Sessions can focus on scholarly journals, Web site evaluation, etc. We ask that you request no more than three concepts be taught in a class.
- For HRD100/110 classes: Library Expedition, a very basic library orientation with fun, active learning exercises to introduce new students to library services, building layout, and the Library’s Web page links. (55 mins.) The research process is not taught in this orientation class.
- Library Research Methods (LIB 187):
This one-credit course further develops college-level research skills. It is offered each semester, taught by an adjunct librarian.

To schedule a class session:
- Contact instruction librarian Joyce Miller as soon as possible.E- mail is preferred: millerja@sunyacc.edu. Or, call ext. 2485.

When you schedule a research session, please note:

- Have several possible dates available. Slots fill up quickly, so plan ahead! The sooner you contact Joyce, the more likely you will get your first choice of times. The class should be scheduled just as students are starting to work on the research assignments, not earlier. Often, that is towards the middle of the semester.

- You are invited to bring the class in for more than one session. Discuss what is most useful for your class with Joyce.

- Please review the Faculty Guidelines for Class Visits before your visit. Thanks!

- Faculty must attend and participate in the library sessions. This reinforces the message to students that information skills are important and valued. It also updates faculty on the library’s continually changing and expanding resources. You are also available to answer questions about the assignment and assist students with their research.

- Classes are taught by Joyce Miller or other ACC librarians, depending on availability, work schedules, time of day, faculty requests and subject expertise.

- Classes meet in the lobby, and then go to the 14-computer Library Instruction Room (Rm. 325) in the Scoville Learning Center. The librarian will gather reference books, journals and other relevant materials for your students to use during and after class.

- Sessions start on time. Please make sure you are on time for the class also. Thanks!

- Consider meeting with the librarian after the students have completed their research to hone the assignment for the future, and offer suggestions on improving the class session for next semester. Feedback is important.

- Please let Joyce know if you plan to bring an entire class to the library for informal research time. Other classes may also be in the library using computers and resources. This helps us plan reference desk coverage and space and computer use.

- Whether you bring your class to the library or not, please send your research assignments to Joyce. Copies are kept at the Reference Desk to help librarians prepare for students’ questions. Knowing about assignments also helps us ensure that we have enough material for your students.

Thank you! Any questions, please contact Reference and Instruction Librarian Joyce Miller.
