Four Difficulties Colleges Have With Students with Learning Disabilities and/or ADD
  1. There is only so much support a college can give you.
The ADA/504 laws provide that colleges must make support services available for students. However, the law clearly states that students must be able to learn at the same level as other students on campus. Their accommodation is to level the playing field, not to give them advantage.
  2. The student's basic academic skills are just too low.
Professors expect a student to be able to communicate clearly, in writing, h/h knowledge of what is taught in the class. If basic skills need improvement, seek the help to get them up to post-secondary expectations.
  3. The student fails and then comes for help when it is too late.
Students often think they can make it in college without accommodating for their learning disability so they do not seek the help of support staff. The support staff cannot guarantee passing grades, but the support staff can help the student to build strategies that will help h/h reach goals. A college student must be realistic about his/her limitations and plan ahead to deal with them.
  4. Students don't follow through on our recommendations.
Ignoring the advice of the support services may be costly. They are experienced and knowledgeable and want your college experience to be successful.
