Accessibility Services

The Office of Accessibility Services and the Learning Specialist at Adirondack Community College are committed to providing equal educational opportunityto students with disabilities by ensuring equal access to all academic programs and facilities in accordance with:

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)
and
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

The ADA and Section 504 provide protection for individuals with a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits that person in one of more major life activity, and any individual who "is regarded as" or "has a history of" such an impairment. Within post-secondary education, these laws further define and "otherwise qualified" individual as one who meets the academic and technical standards requisite to admission or participation in the College's programs and activities.

To qualify for accomodations, students must identify themselves as a student with a disability and provide the Accessibility Services Office with appropriate documentation. Guidelines for submitting documentation can be obtained from our office.

Office of Accesibility Services

Our goal is to ensure that all qualified students are afforded the same opportunities available to the general college population. We achieve this goal by providing our students with reasonable accommodations and a variety of auxiliary aids and support services. The Director of Accessibility Services meets with each student before the semester begins to discuss the procedure for arranging reasonable accommodations based on individual needs.

General services may include:
  • Consultation with the Director
  • Liaison with local, state and federal agencies i.e. VESID, CBVH
  • Evaluative tour of the campus for physically challenged students
  • Assistance with arranging for attendant services
  • Special scheduling
  • Registration and bookstore assistance
  • Classroom accommodations and faculty liaison
  • Supplemental academic support
  • Accessible academic computer stations and software

The Learning Specialist

The Learning Specialist works directly with the Director of Accessibility Services to coordinate testing accommodations and academic support services for students with disabilities. Students receiving services from the Learning Specialist meet early in the semester to have accommodations arranged in advance of need and work closely together to ensure accommodations are pursued and received appropriately.

The range of services may include:
  • Consultation with the Learning Specialist
  • Self-advocacy training
  • Advocacy with faculty
  • Alternate testing arrangement
  • Academic Support
  • Assistance in receiving textbooks on tape
  • Assistance in arranging for note takers
  • Assistance with proofreading and editing written work
