Accuplacer FAQ's

What is Accuplacer?

Accuplacer is a computer-based assessment that is given via the Internet. The program is “adaptive,” meaning that it will adjust the types of questions it gives you based upon your performance on the previous question. This means that we can get an accurate placement score without you having to take a lengthy assessment.

Why do I have to take Accuplacer?

Students are “flagged” for placement testing based upon their New York State Regents scores in Math and English. Once a student is flagged the OASIS Center contacts them to schedule a testing appointment.

What are the scores used for?

The College uses a number of different factors to place you in your first semester courses. Accuplacer is another piece of information that is used by our Counselors when deciding which courses you will take. Please note that your scores will not effect, in any way, your admission to the College. The goal is to place you in courses that best fit your abilities at this time.

How does it work?

Accuplacer measures your abilities in English and Math, and you may be required to take one or both parts (the proctor will tell you what you need to take). The English portion has two parts: Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills (20 questions each), while the math has only an Arithmetic assessment (17 questions). You will be entering your information into the computer, so if you're not familiar with them be sure to complete the brief tutorial before starting the assessment. You may not use a calculator unless Accuplacer provides one for you, and no web assistance is allowed at any time.

How long will it take?

Accuplacer has no time limit, so TAKE YOUR TIME. Remember, the scores will be used when choosing your first college classes, so it is important that we get the most accurate reading possible.

How did I do?

You will not receive your scores at the time you test. When you return to campus to schedule your classes one of our professional Counselors will go over them with you, as well as many other issues regarding your first year at ACC. However, if you would like a copy of your scores just ask the proctor and they will print one out for you.

What happens next?

When you have finished the assessment Accuplacer will automatically generate your results. As stated previously, your results will be interpreted for you when you come back to meet with a Counselor. You will schedule the counseling appointment in the OASIS Center .

What should I bring?

Any and all materials will be provided for you by the College. All you need to bring is your brain!

How much does it cost?

Accuplacer is free of charge to students.

What is the “matriculation fee”?

This is a $40 charge that students must pay before they can be scheduled for their meeting with a counselor to get their classes. You do not need to pay this fee to take Accuplacer.
