William Hart Hill (1891-1959) was an historian, author of several books and collector of regional history material. He was specifically interested in the history of Washington County and Fort Edward. Mr. Hill also operated the Newton and Hill Hardware store in Fort Edward. His store supplied much of the dynamite used in mines in the Adirondacks. Mrs. Hill donated the material to ACC in 1978.
Among the collection's items are scrapbooks of original letters and articles compiled by Mr. Hill; county and town histories; and books on events and people instrumental in the region's history, including the French and Indian War and American Revolution. The ACC Library augments the original collection by purchasing current books relating to the area's history. The Library's online catalog lists these items. |
To preserve the Hill Collection:
The following guidelines strive to preserve Hill Collection material while maintaining accessibility:
- Since it is a research collection, materials do not circulate.
- Researchers must use care in handling Hill Collection materials. Many are old, valuable and easily damaged.
- The only patron material that may be used with Hill Collection material are notepad and pencil. No exceptions are permitted. Backpacks, coats, and personal items other than note taking material must be left at the Circulation Desk.
- Patrons should keep the records in the present arrangement. Turn pages slowly and carefully. Loose pages will stay in order if turned like pages in a book. Report any damage to the reference librarian.
- Photocopying is not permitted of any Original Hill
Collection material. Exposing old or fragile materials to photocopying
processing damages them and shortens their life span.
- Photo identification is required to use Hill Collection materials.
- Theft, destruction or mutilation of library materials is a crime.
- Food and drink are not allowed in the Hill Room.
To use the Hill Collection:
1) During regular Library hours
- Researchers may search the online library catalog to find Hill Collection material.
- To use Hill Collection material, ask the reference librarian for a Hill Collection Patron Registration Form. Follow the directions on the form then sign and return it to the librarian with a photo identification.
- The reference librarian will bring you to the Hill Collection Room and obtain up to four selected items from the locked cabinets. The librarian will note any damage, loose pages, broken bindings, etc. When finished with the material, notify the librarian. The librarian will ensure all items were returned and that no defacement occurred.
- The librarian will then return the patron's identification.
- Any questions about the use of the Hill Collection may be brought to the attention of the Library Division Chair, Teresa Ronning.
2) Wednesdays 9 am to 3 pm
- The Hill Collection Room is open for general use during these hours. A librarian will be available in the room to assist and answer questions.
- Leave any personal items at the Circulation Desk. Only paper and pencil may be brought into the Hill Room.
