While it is primarily the responsibility of the student and family to finance educational expenses, it is recognized that the ability to do so varies from family to family. This ability is measured using a Federally-mandated "Needs Analysis Methodology" formula based on income, assets, and family size information the student provides on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The result is called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), and financial aid is awarded to supplement the EFC by using this formula:
Cost of Attendance - EFC = Demonstrated Financial Need
The Demonstrated Financial Need figure represents the maximum amount of need-based aid a student may receive. There are loans available to assist with a student's EFC if necessary.
The Cost of Attendance includes not only tuition and fees, but also books, transportation, and housing. Thus you may use financial aid toward both college and living expenses.
