Campus Offices and Resources

Accessibility Services
The Office of Accessibility Services and the Learning Specialist are committed to providing equal educational opportunity to students with disabilities by ensuring equal access to all programs and activities of the College, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Our office also works with adult students in vocational training programs and assists in coordinating services for students sponsored by programs and agencies such as Vocational Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID), the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH), and area Employment and Training offices to support eligible students in pursuing higher education.

Under the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, students are eligible for services through our office if they have a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits a major life activity. Within post-secondary education, these laws further define eligible students as those who are, independent of disability, otherwise qualified for admission and participation in the College’s programs and activities. Our goal is to ensure that all qualified students are afforded the same opportunities available to the general college population. We achieve this goal by providing our students with reasonable accommodations and a variety of auxiliary aids and support services. The Director of Accessibility Services meets with each student before the semester begins to discuss the procedure for arranging reasonable accommodations based on individual needs.

The Learning Specialist works directly with the Director of Accessibility Services to coordinate testing accommodations and academic support services for students with disabilities. Students receiving services from the Learning Specialist meet early in the semester to have accommodations arranged in advance of need and work closely together to ensure accommodations are pursued and received appropriately.
For more information or to register with the Accessibility Services Office, please call (518)-743-2282, TTY (518)-743-2323 or fax (518)-743-2241.

ACC Center for Personal and Professional Development
The ACC Center for Personal and Professional Development (formerly the Office of Continuing Education) was created to provide a comprehensive variety of quality programming to reflect the lifelong learning needs and interests of the diverse local population in Warren, Washington, and Saratoga counties. Since that time, the ACC Center has provided credit, non-credit, and certificate courses, workshops, teleconferences, and seminars in an effort to enhance the personal and professional development of individuals in the public sector, private industry, and the community at large. Classes vary in length and scope and are held both on campus (at our main campus in Queensbury and the Wilton Extension Center) and at various locations throughout the community. For further information, please call 743-2238.

Campus Safety
At Adirondack Community College, the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors is a high priority. A safe and secure environment can be achieved only through the cooperation of all members of the campus community. Everyone must assume responsibility for their personal safety and the security of their personal belongings by taking common-sense precautions.

Campus Reporting and Prevention
Any criminal actions occurring on campus are reported to the Director of Facilities. Other emergencies are reported to either the Director of Facilities or the Vice President for Administrative Services and Treasurer. After receiving reports of criminal or emergency occurrences, the Director of Facilities will investigate and maintain a file of all incidents. College personnel do not have the authority to enforce laws; therefore, the College depends on the Warren County Sheriff’s Department and the New York State Police.

Safety Related Programming
Periodically, the College offers tapes and presentations about personal safety to the College community. A Safety Committee meets throughout the year to keep abreast of current issues and concerns. The committee suggests methods of keeping staff and students informed of campus safety issues.

Call 743-2278 for an appointment or stop by the Counseling Office in Warren Hall.

Financial Aid
The mission of the ACC Financial Aid Office is to promote equal access to higher education by providing assistance to students who, without such aid, would be unable to attend college. Approximately 65% of all ACC students and almost 80% of full-time freshmen receive some form of financial assistance, sharing over $9 million annually.

Financial aid comes in three forms: grants and scholarships (which do not have to be repaid), loans (which must be repaid with interest after you complete your education), and jobs on campus (students receive bi-weekly paychecks for hours worked). For names, descriptions, and eligibility requirements of each program please refer to either the ACC Catalog, or the Financial Aid section of the ACC web site at www.sunyacc.edu/page562

At ACC, the optimal time to apply for aid is June 1 for the fall semester and November 1 for spring classes. However, you may apply after the academic year has begun, but you may not be eligible for as much funding. Common financial aid applications include the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for federal aid, the Express TAP Application (ETA) for state aid, and the Master Promissory Note (MPN) for loans.

You must reapply for aid and file a FAFSA every academic year.

After you have been deemed financially eligible for aid by federal and/or state agencies, you must meet certain standards of academic progress to continue to receive funding in subsequent semesters. These are referred to as standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress, and are different for the federal aid programs (Pell Grant, SEOG Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant, Stafford and PLUS Loans, and federal work study), and the New York State programs (TAP, APTS, ADA-TAP, scholarships).

The financial aid section of the ACC Catalog and “The ABC’s of Financial Aid” brochure contain charts showing the specific standards which students must meet as they progress toward completion of their ACC degree or certificate.

Only classes required for an ACC degree or certificate qualify for financial aid eligibility so be mindful of repeated classes or excessive electives.

Ask the Financial Aid Office if your current and/or future semester aid will be affected if you withdraw from a class or from the College.

Financial aid recipients will also want to check with the Financial Aid Office before withdrawing from a class or classes due to a mandate which requires ACC to recalculate award amounts within a semester. In other words, the amount which you were awarded for a particular semester may have to be reduced if you withdraw from class(es). You may be required to repay a portion of your financial aid to the College.

The Financial Aid Office is located in Warren Hall. It is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. If you need to make an evening appointment with a representative, please call 743-2223.

Short-term Credit
The Financial Aid and Business Offices at ACC maintains an interest-free emergency fund to assist students in financial emergencies who have been awarded financial aid and whose aid eligibility exceeds their tuition and fee bill. Emergency loans are generally available within 48 hours. Typically, loans are for $50-$300. The loan amount is dependent upon the student’s need, as well as the amount of financial aid pending disbursement. Short-term credit advances are available during the fall and spring semesters only.

Food Services
Located downstairs in the Student Center, the Food Court provides a wide variety of hot and cold foods, from salads and sandwiches to grilled items, soups, pizzas, and daily specials. The hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday and until 2:00 p.m. on Friday.

The FSA Food Service also operates a cafe in the Scoville Learning Center, which serves a limited menu of sandwiches, snacks, and other items to the campus community. Hours for the Scoville Café are limited, and will be posted at the beginning of the semester. 793-5250, x210

ACC Foundation
Established in 1983, the ACC Foundation’s mission is to raise philanthropic support for student scholarships, professional enrichment opportunities for faculty and staff, and for college-related projects and initiatives.

The ACC Foundation awarded more than $212,470 in assistance to nearly 200 students during the 2006 - 2007 academic year via the Academic Excellence Scholarships (AES), ACC Foundation Scholarships, and scholarships created by local businesses and individual members of the community.

Saturday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Sunday 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.

The library provides a comfortable place to study, read, or do research using resources selected to support ACC courses. The library subscribes to almost 400 magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. Thousands of additional periodicals are available electronically through the library’s many subscription databases. Internet access and word processing are available at all the library workstations.

Approximately 1500 videotapes, DVDs, audio CDs and other media items are available for student use in the library. An ACC ID is required to borrow library books. Students may request materials not owned by ACC via interlibrary loan. Off-campus access to library databases is available with an ACC network username and password.

Librarians are available to assist students whenever the Library is open. Their primary function is to assist and teach students how to navigate the often complex world of information resources. Introduction to library resources is provided through tours, workshops, and course-integrated and one-on-one instruction. ACC also offers a one-credit course, Library Research Methods (LIB 187), usually taught by an adjunct librarian. For more information, please phone 743-2260 or visit www.sunyacc.edu/library.
