All student organizations must be officially recognized by the Student Senate to receive a budget from Student Activity Fee monies.

2007 – 2008 STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

The Adirondack Broadcast Association [ABA] works closely with the college radio station (WGFR, 92.7 FM). The ABA serves the college and surrounding community through enhancing student telecommunications skills and assists new broadcast students in their transition to college life. The ABA also provides DJ services for area schools, as well as college events, and assists with the Prospect Child and Family Center Telethon, held each year at ACC.

The Adirondack Business Club is designed to enrich the student’s understanding of the business world in which we live. Students from all majors are encouraged to participate. The club sponsors many activities for educational and social involvement, such as dances, food drives, fashion shows, alumni career dinners, trips to New York City, and other events. Club members also assist with High School Business Education Day.

ACC College Republicans educate the students and citizens of the greater ACC community on the importance of participating in government on a local, state, and national level, as well as educate the students and community members about the core principles of and values in participating in the New York State Republican party.

ACC ROCX (Outdoor Adventure/Rock Climbing Club) promotes a healthy lifestyle for its members by providing various activities, such as hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing, and other outdoor activities. Weekend trips are often scheduled, and students of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to participate. ROCX received the President’s Cup in the spring of 2006, for outstanding club activity on campus and in the local community.

The Anime Club brings different cultures together by sharing a common interest in Japanese animation.

The Anthropology Club is open to all students, regardless of major. This group plans a variety of social and fundraising activities. Members of this group are also involved with international trips and other cultural explorations.

Chi Alpha Bible Study provides a non-partisan, non-denominational forum for the study and discussion of the Holy Bible.

Circle K is a Kiwanis-supported service organization. It provides opportunities to help those in need, improve campus and surrounding communities, and become more involved in global issues. Circle K builds leadership in its members and encourages their personal development through various service projects.

The College Activity Board plans social, cultural, and educational programs for the campus community. Past programs have included lectures, comedians, dinner theaters, trips, dances, and other special events.

The Criminal Justice Student Organization is open to all students, regardless of major. This group promotes academic excellence, contributes service to the community, and assists its members in the search for academic and career opportunities.

The Culinary Arts Club brings together people interested in the food service industry and culinary arts. Students and faculty share knowledge, experience, and gain new insight into the field. Typical activities include participation in seminars, field trips, food industry shows, and catering.

Dance Dance Revolution represents the interest of Dance Dance Revolution players at ACC.

Mainstage Productions promotes productions and audience interest in worthwhile, challenging, and exciting theatre arts. This group financially co-supports the mounting of all Mainstage productions on the ACC campus as well as the Touring Theater production, which travels to local elementary, middle, and high schools.

The MECS (Math, Engineering, and Computer Science) Club provides those with a common interest in mathematics an opportunity to participate in a student organization that will encourage mathematical inquiry and dialogue, along with expanding intellectual and career horizons.

The Media Arts Club provides education and experience in the field of animation, 3D video, advertising, architectural design, website design, and other means of visual arts. The club also introduces members to future job contacts and opportunities by investigating various options of career placement in the fields of media arts.

The Music Club promotes music and musical performances of all types and genres. Club members are also involved in choral and instrumental groups, which perform on the ACC campus as well as surrounding communities. The Music Club hosts a variety show each semester.

The New Horizons Returning Adult Student Support Group provides adults returning to school with rewarding and fulfilling friendship and activities to support their college experience. Meeting and online discussion group topics include stress relief, time management, children, and legal and financial issues. The New Horizons group shares information on classes and college, as well as plans activities directed toward the adult student. Online access is available through www.geocities.com/newhorizonsacc.

The Philosophy Club (Cogito) brings students together who have an interest in philosophy by reading sections of philosophical works and screening philosophical films for discussion and sponsoring trips for further exposure to philosophical concepts.

The Spanish Club strives to enhance the overall appreciation and understanding of Spanish culture in the community, as well as broadening the horizons of fellow students. The club sponsors trips to related theater programs, and hosts cultural events and activities on a regular basis.

The Student Nurses Club promotes the education and profession of nursing students by sharing information and experiences. The Student Nurses Club has sponsored fund raising and community programs on the ACC campus.

THE STUDENT ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT SENATE

Each student who enrolls at ACC, regardless of whether he or she is a traditional (recent high school graduate), non-traditional (returning adult), beginning or transfer, part-time or full-time student, automatically becomes a member of the Student Association (SA). With over 3,000 members per year, it is by far the largest organization on campus.

The Student Association is governed by the Student Senate. These twenty-one students, with the assistance of faculty and staff advisors, maintain the SA’s budget of almost a quarter million dollars, which comes directly from student activity fees. Most of this money is disbursed to support a variety of campus programs including Athletics, International Education, theatre performances as well as the many clubs. The Senate also oversees the formation and operation of all student clubs and activity groups, works closely with faculty, staff, and administration regarding issues that directly affect students, and provides an important foundation for leadership development to all members of the campus community.

Senate membership includes 7 Freshmen Senators, 7 Sophomore Senators, and 2 Part-Time Senators. Officers are equally represented by new and returning students. The President, Treasurer, and Student Trustee are all sophomores while the Vice President and Secretary are freshmen.

The Senate holds a meeting once a week on campus (every Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 until 1:50 p.m. in the Student Center).

Meetings are open to all and address a variety of issues, ranging from disbursing needed funds for student organizations and other activities to scheduling special events. The Senate also examines ways to improve the campus atmosphere, which may include special remodeling projects, beautification of campus grounds, and listening to student concerns and ideas about campus issues. The Senate will then address these issues with the appropriate administrative staff.

The Senate is also involved in various off-campus community projects, such as the Bay Road Clean Up program, where Senate members, with help from the student body, pick up trash twice a year along their adopted stretch of Bay Road. Other projects regularly supported by the Senate include the Red Cross Blood Drives and the annual holiday Angel Tree program.

Senate members are often involved in other campus organizations. In addition, Senators serve on a number of Senate sub-committees. Senators may also be appointed, by the College’s Dean for Student Affairs to serve on important decision-making college level committees and boards, such as the Student Affairs Advisory Board, the Student Disciplinary Review Board, the Campus Safety Committee, and others. In fact, one officer of the Senate, elected by the student body, serves as a student/Senate representative on the College’s Board of Trustees - the highest governing body of any college or university.

Interested in becoming involved with the Student Senate?
Petitions are available Tuesday, September 4 – Tuesday, September 18, 2007 for fall elections and voting will be held Wednesday, September 19 – Tuesday, September 25.

ALL STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VOTE!!
