How can advisement help me?

Academic advisement is more than just getting your classes. Yes, advisors will help you choose classes that fit into your degree program so you will stay on course towards reaching your educational goals. However, advisors are a resource for you in many other ways. They can help you explore different career paths within your chosen major, research schools you might wish to transfer to, connect with professionals in your dicipline in the community, develop college success skills (time management, study skills, note taking, etc.), connect with other students (including peer tutors), connect with student services at ACC, and much more. As you can see, your advisor is someone who can help you overcome obstacles to your success, whatever they may be.

While your advisor is happy to work with you, it is YOUR responsibility to reach out to them for assistance. Remember, college is different than high shcool in the sense that we expect the student to take the lead role in managing their education. Advisors are a resource for you, but ultimately you are in charge of your own destiny.

The following chart might be helpful as you think about how you and your advisor can work together during your time here at ACC:

Advisee Responsibilities Advisor Responsibilities
To seek advisor when appropriate To provide, or connect, students with services necessary to accomplish their educational and life goals
To manage their path towards completing their chosen degree To remain current with degree program requirements
To schedule, prepare for, and attend appointments To provide adequate time to meet with academic advisees
To take responsibility for their educational experience both in and out of the classroom To empower students by giving them the "tools" necessary to navigate higher education

Students who work with their advisor while in school are more successful in reaching their educational goals, period. So go see your advisor, today!
