How can advisement help me?
Academic advisement is more than just getting your classes. Yes, advisors will help you choose classes that fit into your degree program so you will stay on course towards reaching your educational goals. However, advisors are a resource for you in many other ways. They can help you explore different career paths within your chosen major, research schools you might wish to transfer to, connect with professionals in your dicipline in the community, develop college success skills (time management, study skills, note taking, etc.), connect with other students (including peer tutors), connect with student services at ACC, and much more. As you can see, your advisor is someone who can help you overcome obstacles to your success, whatever they may be.
While your advisor is happy to work with you, it is YOUR responsibility to reach out to them for assistance. Remember, college is different than high shcool in the sense that we expect the student to take the lead role in managing their education. Advisors are a resource for you, but ultimately you are in charge of your own destiny.
The following chart might be helpful as you think about how you and your advisor can work together during your time here at ACC:
