Residential Tutor-Mentor, Pre-Freshman Summer Program, Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)

This is a full-time, temporary, grant-funded appointment from 07/05/19 through 08/03/19 and is supported by SUNY’s Office of Opportunity Programs.  SUNY Adirondack’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) will offer a 4-week intensive Pre-Freshman Summer Program designed to assist financially and academically eligible incoming freshman with intensive writing and mathematics instruction, enhanced orientation, a residential program, and academic support services.  

 The Residential Tutor-Mentor will be responsible to:

  • Ensure the well-being of roughly 40 incoming freshmen, with regards to health, safety, morale, discipline, interpersonal relationships within the group, and academic progress. The Residential Tutor-Mentors are expected to live in college housing and provide supervision of students. 
  • Provide elective and recreational activities, field trips, study hall, and residence life programming.
  • Provide tutoring and supplemental instruction to program participants in Writing and/or Mathematics.
  • Act as a Teacher’s Assistant in selected classes
  • Appropriately work with student participants to encourage participation, enhance college preparation and maintain program academic and behavioral standards.
  • Attend all field trips (some overnight trips required), cultural events, college visits, and community service events
  • Attend staff orientation meeting before the start of the summer program
  • Attend staff debrief meeting after close of summer program and program closing activities 
  • Attend daily staff meetings during the Pre-Freshman Summer Program
  • Transport students to internship placements and cultural activities around the community

 Qualifications:

  • Enrolled undergraduate or graduate student who has met high academic standards. 3.0 cumulative college GPA with 45+credits earned is preferred.  Certification, Associate degree or Bachelor degree preferred.  
  • The ability to teach elective courses or facilitate workshops.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge, ability, and sensitivity to work with, teach, and counsel students who have been traditionally underrepresented.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.

Compensation: $2,250, plus free on campus housing for the length of the program + free meals + opportunity to attend cultural and recreational activities at no cost.
