Ballston Spa student wins $500 SUNY Adirondack Foundation book award for Fall 2014 semester
(QUEENSBURY, NY – April 11, 2014) – Jesi Slater of Ballston Spa, a senior at Ballston Spa High School, is the winner of a $500 book award drawing sponsored by the SUNY Adirondack Foundation.
Jesi attended SUNY Adirondack’s college-wide Open House on Friday, April 4, and was one of 371 prospective students who entered to win the award.
Jesi’s mother Mary was thrilled to receive the news, but admitted she wasn’t sure it was true.
“I thought, ‘Is this a joke?’” Mary said. “It couldn’t have come at a better time.”
SUNY Adirondack Foundation Executive Director Rachael Hunsinger Patten, Jesi Slater, and SUNY Adirondack Foundation Assistant Director Jill Vogel.
Jesi plans to study child psychology. She is considering whether she will live on campus, and sees the opportunity as “a great way to meet new people.”
“The money we raise is for our students and for improving the teaching and learning environment,” said Rachael Hunsinger Patten, executive director of the SUNY Adirondack Foundation. “We’re happy to have Jesi as our first book award winner.”
Established in 1983, the SUNY Adirondack Foundation is a 501(c) 3 charitable corporation and provides more than $200,000 in scholarships for local students each year, sponsors mini grants and special request funding for faculty and staff initiatives, and raises funds for college projects.
