Center for Reading and Writing

Welcome to the SUNY Adirondack Center for Reading and Writing (CRW), a tutoring resource available to students, faculty, and staff of SUNY Adirondack. The facility promotes the skills needed for college-level learning.

Visitors to the CRW work with tutors at any stage of their reading or writing project – from understanding the assignment and brainstorming ideas to proofreading the final draft of a written paper. The CRW is located on the main floor of the Scoville Learning Center and at the Wilton Tutoring Center.

  • Call 518-832-7603 or stop by the CRW to set up your appointment.
  • Email writingcenter@sunyacc.edu. Be sure to include your preferred date, a window of available times, and a brief description of your assignment.
  • Use the online scheduler, WCOnline, to make your own appointment online.
  • 25 or 45-minute face-to-face sessions: These appointments are held in the CRW, either the Queensbury location in the Scoville Learning Center or the Wilton Tutoring Center.
  • 15 minute drop in session: These sessions are for quick questions or very brief feedback. Drop in sessions cannot interfere with scheduled appointments.
  • New: Online Tutoring! These sessions are held online through our appointment scheduler, WCOnline. To schedule an online appointment yourself, simply schedule your appointment in WCOnline and select “Online Session” in the appointment box. You can also contact the CRW to set up online sessions.

  • To access the online appointment scheduler, click HERE.
  • If you don’t already have a WCOnline account, select “click here to register.” Fill out the form that follows using your SUNY ADK Wolfmail email address and create your own personal password.
  • For a 25-minute appointment, please schedule a 30-minute block on the scheduler. Consultants use the remaining minutes to complete session notes or reports.
  • For a 45-minute appointment, please schedule a 1 hour block on the scheduler. Consultants use the remaining minutes to complete session notes or reports.

Services

  • Writing Consultation: Writing consultants are available to assist with any writing project, at any stage, for any level of writer.  Whether your project is for an English class or any other major, we’re here to help. Bring the assignment sheet or instructor directions, and we can assist with brainstorming, outlining, draft feedback, as well as editing, revision, and final polishing.

  • Reading Consultation: Reading academic texts require very different skill sets than reading fiction. Let our consultants share tips, techniques, and skills to make those texts easier to understand.

  • Subject Tutoring: The CRW hosts tutors from other departments alongside the writing and reading consultants. These tutors are available for history, psychology, and anthropology. To schedule a subject tutor, follow the exact same steps as regular CRW appointments. Select the schedule titled “Subject Tutoring.”

  • Drop In: Though we recommend scheduling appointments ahead of time, the CRW does also offer Drop In services. If a consultant is available, s/he can sit down with clients for brief sessions. The busiest times are typically the week before and including midterms and finals, so please plan ahead.

  • Creative Writing: The CRW now hosts its own Creative Writing Group! This group meets once a week (check the CRW’s Hours for this semester’s day and time!) to learn tips and techniques as well as share members’ various projects. To join or sample the Creative Writing Group, email writingcenter@sunyacc.edu.

  • Speech Preparation: Have a speech you need to practice? CRW consultants can assist with outlining, note cards, and even practice. Let us be your audience and provide you with tips and techniques to prepare you.

  • ESL Conversation Group: The CRW also hosts an informal conversation group that allows English language learners a comfortable environment in which to practice spoken English.
