Creative Writing

SUNY Adirondack offers a two-year Associate in Arts (AA) degree in Creative Writing specifically geared toward transfer to a bachelor’s degree.

Since creative writers both create content and critique the work of others, they are highly sought after in many positions across all industries and regions.

Creative writing is the ability to generate clear, vivid and effective communication. It is said to be one of the most flexible talents a professional can hold and considered the ultimate form of self-expression.  Students will learn both technical and creative skills in writing and critical thinking

SUNY Adirondack’s Creative Writing program begins with introductory classes in Composition and Communication, setting the stage for advanced classes that focus on technical elements of different writing genres. Through lectures, readings, writing exercises and examining the published works of others, students will study the history of literature and how it informs our world today.

SUNY Adirondack offers small class sizes and access to dedicated faculty who have years of real-world experience in published magazines and newspapers, along with their own published works and stories. Students in the Creative Writing program gain insight into the life of contemporary writers who visit campus classrooms to give readings and reflect on their careers.

This program is also unique in that it’s only one of two community college programs in the SUNY system to offer Creative Writing and offers opportunities to write, edit and contribute to college publications.

While the Creative Writing AA degree is primarily geared toward transfer opportunities, graduates will find they can take the skills and critical thinking learned in this degree straight into a relevant career.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will have developed advanced writing skills to continue with a 4-year education. This particular program has been favorably reviewed by partner transfer institutions, such as:

  • SUNY Oswego
  • Siena College
  • SUNY Cortland
  • SUNY Plattsburgh
  • New York University
