“Back in 2005, I started at SUNY Adirondack right out of high school, but after losing my grandmother — the first big loss in my family — I didn’t know how to navigate my emotions. Between working, coaching and going to school, I eventually walked away.
That’s when I fell into addiction. For more than a decade, I struggled. In 2020, after nearly losing my life to an overdose, I had a moment of clarity: enough is enough. Since then, recovery has blessed me in ways I never thought possible, and I’ve been able to give back as an advocate and mentor for others.
This spring, I saw a post about SUNY Reconnect and thought, ‘No way, I can go back to school for free?’ I came to campus, had conversations with staff and found out I’m only three semesters away from finishing my degree. On my birthday, I finally told my parents — and now I’m all in.
Walking on campus again, I felt like that 18-year-old kid, but with the perspective and strength I have today. I’m proud of myself for getting here, and I know this is where I’m meant to be.
The best lesson you can teach others is your lived experience. I hope my journey inspires people to know they’re not alone, and to trust the process.”
