FAQs about ASAP

To be eligible for ASAP, all students must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen (NYS DREAM Act students also eligible)
  • Be eligible for in-state tuition
  • Be a full-time student in a degree program (minimum 12 credits per semester)
  • Complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) applications
  • Be a recipient of Pell or TAP grant aid
  • Actively participate in all mandatory ASAP activities, including  academic advisement, career development workshops and other program-specific services designed to support academic and personal growth
  • Take any required remedial courses immediately upon enrollment

Cost of attendance award

  • Students receive an annual award divided across the Fall and Spring semesters of up to $400. These funds are designated for the non-tuition components of the cost of attendance after all other federal and state financial aid has been applied. This award is intended to offset the full cost of college attendance beyond tuition such as room/board and  personal needs.
  • If cost of attendance funding remains after covering these costs, a refund should be issued to the student.
  • If a student loses need-based financial aid, the cost of attendance award would not continue to be provided, but it can be reinstated if the student has their need-based aid reinstated.

Transportation/monthly stipend

  • Students enrolled in SUNY ASAP are provided with a monthly stipend of $50, up to $400 annually, to assist with transportation or other necessary monthly expenses. This stipend may be distributed monthly through a check, a campus-operated expense card, or through a restricted-use card designated for specific purchases like gas or groceries.
  • This support is especially critical in addressing the transportation needs of students attending rural campuses, where commuting distances are generally much greater.

Textbook stipend

  • Each student receives a $150 textbook stipend per semester, up to $300 annually, to offset the costs of textbooks and instructional materials. Campuses may choose to distribute these funds through a drawdown account at campus bookstores or through the financial aid system, which allows for greater flexibility in purchasing materials from various sources. This is particularly important for campuses where access to a single bookstore may be limited.
  • Any unused portion of the textbook stipend must be returned to the student.
